Maui Conservation Initatives
Reforestation
Skyline's Maui operations host numerous tree planting events throughout the year. Working with local schools, boy scout troops, and youth groups, Skyline staff teaches kids about the importance of caring for the environment. Participating groups have the opprotunity to plant native trees in one of Skyline's reforestation areas and enjoy a thrilling Skyline Adventure on us! To date Skyline Eco-Adventures outreach program has been responsible for the reforestation of hundreds of native trees and shrubs around Skyline's two Maui, Hawaii zipline courses.
Paid Service Days
Believing that community service begins with us, Skyline Eco-Adventures Maui staff accrues "Paid Service Days", allowing them to take a number of days off each year and volunteer in their community while being paid their full wages by Skyline. This program has been designed to benefit any local non-profit and to date has been used by Skyline Guides and staff for everything from beach clean-ups on Maui to week-long camping trips to assist in the restoration of cultural and environmental elements on the island of Kaho'olawe
Groups We Support
EAST MAUI WATERSHED PARTNERSHIP - EMWP was created in 1991 to pool economic, technical, and human resources in a combined effort to protect the 100,000 acre East Maui Watershed. This irreplaceable native ecosystem is home to some of the world's most endangered birds and is one of Maui's major water sources. EMWP works to protect this watershed land and the dozens of rare and endangered species that live there.
MAUI CULTURAL LANDS - Through education, Archeological Stabilization, and Reforestation, MCL is working to restore over 3 miles of Honokawai Valley on West Maui. It is estimated that before European contact, over 600 Hawaiian families lived in Honokowai, an area that was considered the breadbasket of Ka'anapali. Through the work of MCL's Project Malama Honokowai, invasive plants in the valeey are being pushed back, rare and endangered Hawaiian flora is being planted and this culturally significant area is being stabilized.
THE NATURE CONSERVANCY - The mission of the Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural comunities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. Since it's inception in 1951, TNC has protected more than 117 million acres of land and 5,000 miles of river around the world. The Waikamoi Preserve, located only a few miles from the Haleakala Skyline Tour on Haleakala Ranch, encompasses over 5,000 acres of pristine Hawaiian rainforest. This Nature Conservancy managed area is a critical habitat for a wide range of Native Hawaiian plants and animals.
